According to a White House document seen by Reuters on Wednesday, United States President Donald Trump would sign an executive order to permanently ban ByteDance’s short-video app TikTok from Google (GOOGL) and Apple (AAPL) app stores.
“Prohibited transactions may include, for example, agreements to make the TikTok app available on app stores … purchasing advertising on TikTok, and accepting terms of service to download the TikTok app onto a user device,” the document stated.
The news organization said that the document is not yet final. However, it was reportedly sent out to the administration’s supporters.
“That kills TikTok in the U.S. If they want to grow, these rules are a huge obstacle,” Center for Strategic and International Studies Washington’s Cyber Security Expert James Lewis said.
“Though the U.S. government may not be able to prevent Americans from downloading TikTok from foreign websites,” he added.
